Geotechnical Engineer - Wilkes-Barre / Scranton, PA

GSET is looking for an experienced geotechnical engineer in our Jessup, PA office, who has a strong business acumen and embodies an ownership mentality. This role will develop and lead key initiatives to include project management, expert technical consulting, establishing client relationships, and develop winning strategies that generate sales throughout the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. The successful candidate must demonstrate proficient verbal and written communication skills, excellent computer skills, strong work ethic, adaptability, and teamwork skills.
This position will support a wide range of projects requiring broad knowledge and experience in geotechnical engineering, including shallow foundations; deep foundations; retaining structures; mine remediation; karst hazards; mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) berms/walls; slope stability; ground improvement techniques; geotechnical support of natural gas and solid waste projects; and others. Experience with construction materials testing of soils and concrete is also desired.
Responsibilities:
• Manage and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
• Maintain schedules, develop project timelines, coordinate with subcontractors, and manage people and materials to complete jobs on schedule and within budget guidelines.
• Act as the direct point of contact in communication with clients and stakeholders.
• Assess and mitigate project risks in advance of detailed engineering efforts.
• Take a lead role with business development for the Jessup office, including the preparation of technical proposals.
• Perform and/or check technical calculations and prepare geotechnical reports.
• Prepare client communications, proposals, contract documents, etc. and consult with other internal partners as needed.
• Monitor project work progress, adhere to the scope of work and communicate with key stakeholders including the project manager, client, and subcontractors.
• Pro-actively recognize conditions and problems of non-routine nature and develop effective solutions.
Base Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering is a minimum. Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering is preferred.
• P.E. registration strongly preferred or ability to obtain within one year.
• 4+ years of geotechnical experience.
• Excellent communication and public speaking skills: articulate, assertive, and confident.
• Strong organizational skills with proven ability to manage multiple, complex projects.
• Creative thinker with effective teamwork skills.
• Ambitious and eager to grow.

Field Technician - Multiple Locations
This position will consist of conducting Construction Quality Assurance (CQA)/Construction Quality Control (CQC) field inspections & material laboratory quality control testing. CQA/CQC responsibilities will include, but not be limited to field testing of concrete, soil & aggregate & bituminous paving materials. Candidate will receive on the job training to perform the following: field density and observations of soil placement, field testing of plastic concrete, including the preparation and formation of field and laboratory samples, field testing and observations of bituminous materials, hand auger borings under the direction of project manager, observe excavations & correlated the observations to soil boring logs. Proper reporting of test results will be mandatory in a timely fashion. Ideal candidate will have construction labor or observation experience, technical writing and strong language skills, and the ability to adequately communicate with Contractors and Owner’s representative. Basic computer skills. Experience in shoring, deep foundation & ground improvement inspection or NICET II registration, a plus.
The CQA/CQC position will also require the person to develop skills to perform laboratory tests on field specimens. These tests could include laboratory moisture content, proctor, gradation, concrete compression and bituminous tests.
EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma (or equivalent), 2 Year vocational, or college degree preferred. Physically capable of the physical labor required, including work at hazardous waste sites with personal protective equipment. MUST have the ability to lift 30-60 lbs from the floor to 2′, occasionally lift 60-100 lbs from the floor to 2′ and frequently carry 30-60 lbs for 10-30′. Occasionally carry 60-100 lbs for 10-30′, stand for up to 8 hours, often on uneven surfaces and move for up to 8 hours with frequent bending and stooping. Occasional outside work in inclement weather and travel for extended periods are a possibility.
The person to be accepted for this position MUST have a valid driver’s license without restriction. The person must have personal and reliable transportation to allow him/her to get from the residence to the work place and return. The person may be asked to use personal transportation for work related purposes. The person will be compensated for travel expenses at approved government rates. The person MUST pass a drug screening and a background check.
